The fourth Mayor Al Arquillano Camotes National Mountain Bike
Challenge was successfully held last Saturday, March 21, 2009 at
the Mt. Timubo Circuit Technical Race Track, Sonog, San
Francisco, Cebu.

Among the competitors was Nino Surban, a member of the RP
Cycling Team who's the champion of the recent ASEAN Mountain
Bike Championships in Brunei, Darussalam. He won the Open
Elite title, followed by Albert Basirgo, and Randy Carbonera landed
third.

In the juniors/seniors category, John Mier led the pack. Coming in
second was Roy Carbonera and Gino Basirgo took the number
three spot. Nilo Barbalose ruled the masters division, with Emilito
Quebec and Ben Fabroa finishing second and third respectively.
Jezreel Ramoneda got the executive class over Omie Rodriguez,
while Darwin Ruizo finished third.

In the Golden Boys category, Sanyboy Catubay won over Sixto
Quiapo and Danilo Rollon came in third. The fastest among the fat
boys was Roel Hinayas. Second was Arnel Pepino, and third was
Mark Anthony Mendoza.

Micheal Pilapil claimed the title in the Beginners' category over
Roman Fernandez and Brian Lozano. Completing the winners'
circle were Ramon Espinosa, Jun Endrina and Junasis Alicaway,
after taking away the top three positions in the Veterans Category.

The giving and awarding of cash prizes, medals, plaque and
certificates to the winners and participants was conducted at the
Alfredo S. Arquillano SSSr. Memorial Gymnasium attended by no
less than the mayor himself, Hon. Alfredo A. Arquillano Jr., prior to
the San Francisco Basketball Tournament 2009 Championship
Game featuring SMC Snipers vs. UE Warriors.

Aside from the success of the said event, the nearly two-kilometer
technical race track gained positive impressions from the bikers.
Nino Surban even said that the race course was similar to that of
Brunei, Darussalam, where the ASEAN Mountain Bike
Championships happened.

According to one of the members of the Sports and Fitness
Enthusiasts (SAFE) who officiated at the event, they are planning to
organize some much bigger mountain bike competitions, together
with the Philippine Cycling Team Officers, to be held in San
Francisco, Cebu, or an international competition such as the
ASEAN Mountain Bike Championships, perhaps. If this becomes a
reality, it will be a great boost to the sports tourism of our
municipality and something we will be proud of.
SPORTS
CULTURAL ACTIVITY
SOLI - SOLI FESTIVAL - Now in its 8th year, the Soli-Soli
Festival is an annual festivity in which a grand parade of
contingents performing ritual and folk dances passes along the
street till they reach the venue for the final act and performance.

It is named for a species of grass that grows along the banks of
Lake Danao, particularly on the southeastern side. These
grasses are harvested, dried and then woven into different kinds
of handicrafts such as bags, mats, hats, etc.

This festival is held during our town fiesta celebration in honor of
our patron, Saint Joseph. It's one way of showing our gratitude to
him for all the good things and graces our town and our citizenry
has been receiving from his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ through
His guidance and support. This year the Soli-Soli Festival is
scheduled to transpire on March 15, 2009. You are fervently invited
to witness this momentous event and celebrate with us....

FIESTA CELEBRATION, IN MARCH EVERY YEAR!

Yes, every year on March 19, San Francisco celebrates its
town fiesta in honor of the town's Patron, Saint Joseph.
On this occasion, many activities take place. The San
Francisco Basketball and Volleyball Tournaments are
already going on at the newly renovated Alfredo S.
Arquillano Sr. Memorial Gymnasium. Aside from that,
nightly programs sponsored by the different sectors of
the community are scheduled to happen, starting March
12th, every year.

But the most awaited events are the Mayor Al Arquillano
Camotes Islands Cross Country Mountain Bike
Challenge that takes place on the 20th of March with
the theme "Go Biking, Minimize Global Warming," and of
course the Soli-Soli Festival, at which in 2010, its ninth
year, for the first time, the three other festivals of the
Camotes Islands, Tagbo of Poro, Tag-anito of Tudela
and Pamugsay of Pilar joined together and participated
in the ritual dance showdown.

For the religious aspect, the nine-day Novena Mass
begins March 10th every year at 4:30 p.m. daily, and the
Concelebrated Mass on March 19th at 9:00 a.m. at the
